Artist David Cerny was commissioned to do some big installation artwork at the European Union and apparently pulled some funny stuff behind their backs:
“It was supposed to be the centerpiece marking the momentous occasion – Czech Republic’s succession to the presidency of European Union. However, the mammoth sculpture, titled Entropa, currently on display at the EU Headquarter in Brussels has become something of notoriety. The original conception was to show a Europe united, with the focus on strengths of each member nations. Instead, Entropa showed all of the EU nations discombobulated on a mock-up model toy kit. To add further insults, stereotypical statements were put on each nation’s representations.”
He apparently fabricated 26 other artists including websites showing their work in order to have complete control over what went into the piece. So does this mean that the bigwigs and political types that commissioned this artist to spiff up their building didn’t really know jack shit about him or that they really don’t care what the piece was, even up until the point that this GIANT piece was installed in their building? Love to see an artist with a vision go to lengths such as this to get their message across and succeed much to the embarrassment of the beaurocrats that “wanted” his artwork there.

From David Cerny’s wesbite:
“we wanted to find out if Europe is able to laugh at itself….The piece thus also lampoons the socially activist art that balances on the verge between would-be controversial attacks on national character and undisturbing decoration of an official space. We believe that the environment of Brussels is capable of ironic self-reflection, we believe in the sense of humour of European nations and their representatives.“
